Join us for a relaxed afternoon of crafting, conversation, and connection! Bring along your own craft or project to work on, or use the supplies provided. Enjoy coffee, tea, and snacks while connecting with other adults in the military community. Occasional Care-Childminding will be available during the program for a fee; separate registration is required for children who will be attending Occasional Care. Whether you come to create, chat, or simply enjoy some time with others, everyone is welcome!

Will you be welcoming a new bundle of joy soon? Parenthood is a beautiful journey full of love but there can also be a lot of unknowns and unfamiliarity. We would like to offer support to your journey by inviting you to our Expecting Baby course. Topics for consideration will be labor and delivery, lifestyle options (feeding, diapering, sleeping etc.), attachment, and self-care. There will be opportunity for public speakers and resource building so you can move into parenthood feeling supported. This is a 7 session program! It will run every Tuesday and Thursday evening for the month of October.  Program dates are: October 2nd , 6th, 8th, 13th, 15th, 20th and 22nd.

Register once for all 7 sessions.

Childminding is available for families attending this MFRC program. Children will enjoy a safe and welcoming space with MFRC childcare staff while parents/caregivers participate in the program onsite.

Fee: $10 per family
Parents/caregivers must remain onsite for the duration of the program. Spaces are limited and advance registration is required.

This event will run rain or shine. There is no cost to attend and no need to register. Free parking is available and may fill up quickly, additional parking is available at the H&R MFRC, Shearwater Fitness, Sports & Recreation Centre and the Shearwater Flyers Arena. Accessible parking is available. Please speak to one of our volunteers at the gate to request accessible parking.

Your package includes Maze Grounds + a Mini Bag of Apples, making it the perfect way to enjoy some fresh air, family time, and a little apple picking. Each guest will receive a mini bag to fill with delicious apples to take home!

Families can enjoy a delicious meal together, let the kids play and explore, and connect with other military families in a relaxed and welcoming space. Come for brunch, open play, or both and enjoy a fun morning at the Shearwater centre!

Spend the day with us at Community Connection Day!

Community Connection Day is a free Saturday program for CAF and Veteran-connected families to come together, connect, play, share a meal, and enjoy time at the H&R MFRC’s Shearwater Site.

Families can register for one activity, multiple activities, or the full day. Whether your family is new to the Halifax region, navigating deployment, looking to meet other military-connected families, or wanting to spend more time at the MFRC, this is a relaxed opportunity to build connection and community.

Families can enjoy family-friendly programming, connect with MFRC staff, learn more about programs and services, and take part in activities throughout the day.

Please register separately for each part of the day you plan to attend so we can plan for space, food, supplies, and staffing.

Community Connection Day activities include:

Pancake Brunch and Open Family Play: 10:30 AM-12:30
Craft and Chat: 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM
Morale Mail Drop-Off: Available throughout the day, registration not required.

It's almost HOMECOMING!! Which means it's a time to get creative. We'll supply the poster board, stickers, markers, and homecoming saying ideas. 

If you're unable to attend in-person but would like to make a poster email us at deployment@hrmfrc.ca to make arrangements to pick up a kit.

The Occasional and Respite Child Care program is designed specifically to support the unique needs of military families by offering flexible, short-term childcare care in a safe, nurturing, and enriching environment. This program provides peace of mind knowing their children are in the hands of experienced educators who understand and value the military lifestyle.

Children in our care will engage in a variety of age-appropriate and stimulating activities including arts and crafts, music and movement, outdoor exploration, and imaginative play. These activities promote creativity, physical development, and social-emotional growth, all while having fun in a supportive setting.

Our dedicated educators foster strong, positive relationships with each child, helping them feel a true sense of belonging. By interacting with peers from other military families, children build friendships and develop confidence, communication skills, and emotional resilience.

Through this program, children not only reach important developmental milestones but also experience a consistent, caring environment that celebrates who they are and where they come from.

The Occasional and Respite Child Care program is designed specifically to support the unique needs of military families by offering flexible, short-term, unlicensed childcare in a safe, nurturing, and enriching environment with Early Childhood Educators.

Children ages 8 months to 12 years will engage in a variety of age-appropriate games, connect with peers through play and social experiences, listen to stories, sing songs and much more.  Priority will be given to families who are experiencing additional stressors due to the military lifestyle.

Mental Health First Aid Veteran Community is the help provided to members of the Veteran Community developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. 

It does not train people to become counsellors or therapists and just like with physical first aid, we need to ensure that those most in contact with members of the Veteran Community can identify an emerging mental health problem and respond effectively in the event of a crisis. 

Participants will gain a solid understanding of the 5 basic actions of ALGEE: 

Assess the risk of suicide and/or harm
Listen non-judgmentally 
Give reassurance
Encourage professional support
Encourage other supports

This is a safe space for youth to hang out with friends to play with our sports equipment, foosball, video games, board games, and it’s a creative space with paint and craft supplies. Looking to make friends, build confidence, and learn skills that will help you handle life’s ups and downs? Then come join friends and staff at the Henderson Sweetman Youth Centre for Smart Steps: The Comms Circle; a fun and interactive program designed for youth ages 9–13 to practice social skills, emotional regulation, and peer connections through games, group discussions, and hands-on activities. Dungeons & Dragons is a fantasy based role-playing game played with 4+ people. Together with the Dungeon Master, imaginary worlds are created. Moving through the story, individual characters will form teams that explore, battle and problem solve through each adventure. Together we will gather treasure, knowledge and experience points. Teens ages 13+: An evening intended for older youth to come and hangout; youth will have the opportunity to relax, connect with friends, engaging in mature discussions and participate in activities that build social connections and friendships. Space limited, so register today!

What happens when you want to make a grilled cheese sandwich for lunch when your mom is gone out, but you don't know how to use the stove? Or maybe you accidentally cut your finger by yourself, and you don't know how to properly bandage it up. You're now at an age were becoming independent is cool and wouldn't it be great to learn some of these skills while you are home alone?  Join us for our interactive program to learn some of these types of life skills, including stove safety, basic first aid and much more so you can show your parents how responsible you really are! H&R MFRC Navigators are military family service professionals who know the military lifestyle and its unique challenges, the community, and the services/supports available to families.  Navigators will work with families to learn about their military journey, listen to their questions, needs, and strengths, and identify the best tools, services and supports available to help them.
